House on the Table

As long as you’re not claustrophobic, this is a pretty rad desk. It’s Korean designer Soojin Hyun’s creation “House on the Table.” Everyone wants their own personal space, whether its at work or at home. This desk with walls, roof, shelves and windows turns that dream into a reality for the Gareth Keenans and Tim Cantebury’s of the world, and sure beats a nook. Office’s filled with “House on the Table” cities instead of cubicles = the next wave of corporate responsibility… dare to dream right? See more pics by clicking the read more link. (just in case you’ve been trapped in a House on the Table and haven’t figured that out yet.)

To anyone that’s in Calgary today, head over to Olympic Plaza some time after 2pm for day two of Calgary’s first urban art festival. The schedule for todays festivities include local urban art displays, a b-boy battle, local dance showcases and some informative panel discussions. All to be topped off by a blistering (free) performance from the mind numbing melodies of Keys N Krates and Kardinal Offishall. Be sure to check it out.

Cans Festival in London

The Cans Festival is an art event which is happening in London this weekend. It is a Stencil art street battle/party which will include some of the best stencil artists from all over the world. It is taking place at a previously undisclosed location (until today), which has been confirmed as Leake Street, London SE1 7NN.  It will be open to public from 10 am on Sat. May 3rd, till 10pm Mon. The roster of artist is huge and talented, confirmed artists so far include; Bsas Stencil, Run Don’t Walk, James Dodd (dlux), Tom Civil (civilian), Vexta, Prism, Daniel Melim, Altocontraste, Bandit, Roadsworth, 3D Del Naja, Artiste-Ouvrier. Blek, Sten, Sadhu, C215, Lucamaleonte, Lex, Orticancvoodles, Kaagman, Dolk, Pobel, M-City, Vhils, Btoy, Coolture, Schhh, Borbo, Sam3, Faile, Eine, John Grider, Logan Hicks, Pure Evil, Dot masters, Dan, Eelus, Banksy. This list couldn’t exclude Banksy, actually I don’t even think this would have taken place if it wasn’t for all the exposure Banksy has given stencil and street art to the general public. I think this is a great idea and a good way to get people together in a positive, (legal), creative way. I cant wait to see the finished product, it should be an interesting mix of works. Read more

Typeracer

This is my new favourite tool for procrastinating when things get slow at work. Typeracer has it all. Its a competition, its educational, it helps you improve your skills, and after a couple races it’s a bit of a workout. Its perfect for all jobs, especially an office I’d imagine, where your boss thinks you’re being ultra productive when they see you typing away… Carpotunnel here I come!

R.E. Load Messenger Bags

R.E. Load is another company that has based there products on bike culture, and more specifically the messenger community. The company got it’s start in Philadelphia ten years ago and now one of the two original designers has moved back to Seattle (where she was originally from). They themselves are bike messengers and design their bags with that in mind. The production of the bags are done all from scratch, the cutting, and stitching are all done by themselves, they even handle the phones.  Not only can you purchase the pre made bags that they have but they also construct custom bags as well. They pretty much will do anything, they have made a J. Dilla bag and a Pabst bag so I think the options are pretty open. These guys are serious about what they make and stress the quality, durability and function of their bags. If you are in the market for a messenger bag (which I know you are to go with your new fixed build) check these guys out, and support the real deal. Read more

Ratatat

Im not going to lie, I love rap. Like most middle class white kids, I grew up listening to 2pac and Biggie. Nowadays, I can’t get enough of rappers like the Clipse and Ghostface. Its hard for me to constantly listen to it though, every once and a while I want to listen to something that’s not hard as fuck. While Im a pretty big fan of beatmakers like Dilla and RJD2, the softer stuff with little or no lyrics, it still leaves something to be desired. Ratatat has recently filled the void for me. I might be a little late on the uptake when comes to the remixing duo but who cares, I hadn’t heard of them till a little while ago so that means they’re still relatively unknown. In their remixes of classic bangers like Young Buck’s “Stomp”, Jay-Z’s “Allure” and Biggie’s “Party & Bullshit” I get the dope rhymes I crave with easy listening beats, I love it. Check them out by downloading their latest mixtape here.

Goyard is So Rich

Lately I have really been into bags, messenger style, backpacks, duffels, travel bags and even trunks. Goyard is one of the best companies that are in this market. Their history is so rich and exciting, they have been doing it for over 150 years. The quality of the products are absolutely amazing, and the pattern they use is their identity. The company started in 1853 in Paris and was a family run operation for years. They still stick to their roots and all the products are made in France by hand with all the materials coming out of France such as the leathers and woods they use. Their clientele has ranged from the Duke of Windsor to Karl Lagerfeld to Lupe Fiasco. They also customize and hand paint your purchases for you if you want/have the money, these things aren’t cheap and why would they be they are beautiful. Read more

Neckface Vans

These are the new offerings from the Vans camp in collaboration with everybody’s favorite skating /scrawling mad man Neckface. This is the second installment of this joint venture, the first one was awesome so I have high hopes for these.  There are the first few that leaked a little while ago, four different models, a Chukka, TNT 4, SK8-Low and the No Skool Mid. Now there is another one surfacing with the Brooklyn skate shop KCDC, which also look rad. The shoes are dropping with clothes as well, some tee’s a hoodie and a new era hat. Now you can get your whole Neckface outfit on, all you need is a ski mask to top it off. For the full run check out Mashkulture. Read more

Sabre Vision

With Spring here and Summer right around the corner, you need to keep the UV’s up out your eyes. Sabre Vision will help you out with that. The line is real solid, they are taking some classics and flipping them with their own funk. The color choices are on point and the prices are good. If you can’t get your LV Millionaires on then these will do the trick (and are actually cooler). With models called the Dude, the Poolside and the Die Hippy’s the names are almost as good as the glasses. These will be in heavy rotation for the summer. Read more

Shut NYC opens flagship store

This is nice to see, Shut NYC have just opened their new flagship store in New York on 158 Orchard street. These guys are the ones responsible for the upbringing of Zoo York before they handed it off (probably for a lot of money) to Marc Ecko. When they brought back Shut I was stoked as it is old school and has that original flavor. I hope to see more good things from these guys in the future. Read more

Rock the Bells

Wow. Best hip-hop line-up ever, probably of any concert actually:

A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, NAS, MOS DEF, RAKIM, METHOD MAN & REDMAN, RAEKWON & GHOSTFACE, IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE, DEAD PREZ, MURS, SPANK ROCK, JAY ELECTRONICA, WALE, B.O.B., KIDZ IN THE HALL, AMANDA BLANK WITH SPECIAL GUESTS: THE PHARCYDE.

Don’t really have to say much other than that.. It’s in Vancouver August 30. Minus Rakim, Redman and anyone from WU (presumably because of border issues) So much for Bumbershoot….

The Future of Books

The U of C just recently clearcut a section of campus and poured hundred of millions of dollars into the digital library where students will be able to go to sit down at a computer and read electronic books, awesome.  British designer Kyle Bean, a ‘maker of things’, sums up how ridiculous the idea is with his latest build.  It would actually make a pretty cool laptop too though… Check out more of his work here Read more

Idiom

Im not a snowboarder by any means (I went once indoors in Tokyo) but one can’t ignore the work Burton has done/is doing, and considering its mid April and its -11C with a fresh 15cm of snow up here in Calgary, winter-proof coats are kind of a necessity. Their Idiom branch is the cream of the crop and the new line looks like its in the makings for 2010. While its still in the design stage, you know that under Jeff Staple and Hiroshi Fujiwara its going to be as dope as always with no detail overlooked as you can see. Just another thing to look forward too for the Olympics in Vancouver.

Please Get Off Yeezy’s Nuts.

I’m just as much of a Kanye fan at the next guy, but shit is getting a little out of control for my liking. First we had those terrible shutter shades (as seen on chongo’s in diesel flares and affliction tees everywhere) and now the hype has began with the “Air Yeezy”. Kanye’s signature Nike is blowing up across the blogosphere and its kind of unfortunate because of its mediocrity. Call me a hater, but seriously they aren’t even good. The colourway is average, that patent leather strap/handle is wack, and its not like glow in the dark on shoes is a new idea. Remember when everyone started wearing those LV backpacks after College Dropout came out? Where are they now? Thats what I thought. If you want some dope extra high sneakers get these Mutombo’s… p.s. did he break his collar bone? I bet Jake Delhomme is pissed Kanye stole his playbook.

Get Well B

Brendan is a huge part of the H(y)r Collective. Last week he had an accident while we were ripping on our bikes. Luckily he is okay, and will fully recover over the next little while. There are a lot of people who aren’t as fortunate, so I hope everybody can take a breath and be thankful to be living in this world. I want to say thanks to Brendan for the hours upon hours that went into making this site and project possible. Get well soon B, you’re definitely with me today getting this ready for the world!
